4 things I like about Méchant Boeuf

Last month, I went to Méchant Boeuf with my family and we all loved it! Mind you, my Dad is pretty picky about the food and he enjoyed each bite. Since then, I went back a couple of times either just for drinks, dinner or drinks and bread & butter (don't ask).

Here are four of my favorite things about this place

1. Their foie gras poêlé

It MELTS in your mouth. The waitress made a mistake and brought us the foie gras torchon at the beginning and it is not comparable to the warm version. One of the best I've tasted in Montreal.

2. The staff

Excellent service. Cute waiters. Jason at the oyster bar is very sociable. Everyone there is fun, friendly yet professional

I heart Brooklyn: 7 things to love about BK

So I just camee back from an AMAZING weekend in New York and spent most of my time in Brooklyn, which is a city I absolutely love. Keep in mind that although I stayed in Park Slope, I ended up visiting other parts of the city. Here are 7 reasons why I fell in love with the "Borough of Churches":

1. The architecture

 The old brownstone and historical buildings add flare to the city. Intersting how most shops and restaurants have indoor brick walls, which is one of my favorite characteristics in interior design. 

2. Vintage/Second hand stores 

They are all over the place! I was looking for an ADS but found many other shops that satisfied my never ending need for vintage possessions. I found 2$ Top Shop wedges (yes I did, yes I did) and fell in love with many vintage home accessories at Housing Works (an organization helping to fight AIDS by the way, check out their website here...very good cause). Also, my sister and I went absolutely crazy when we discovered Beacon's Closet: Jeffrey Campbell wedges, Marc Jacobs shorts and Stuart Weitzman pumps are just a few things out of the many items we found in this cute and clean vintage shop....and....each item was under 30$! Lots of small vintage boutiques offer a wide variety of decorations, original jewelry and accessories for a very low price. Worth the walk. 

3. Park Slope

I absolutely love the whole neighborhood. The cute and cozy restaurants, the fact that many restaurants on 5th Ave. serve POUTINE (the Quebecoise in me loved it), their street fair, the multi-cultural environment, the hipsters, the shops, the friendliness of the people, its Green environment, the garage sales, the fact that it is really close to Manhattan (not even a 15 min train ride on the F train), and finally, the incredible amount of available parking spots. These are just a few things within about 100 things I adore about this part of town. 

4. Prospect Park 

HUGE park! I saw families having BBQ's, people jogging, kids playing baseball, youngsters just chillin', and of course, this is where the Great Googa Mooga festival was held. Oh and shout out to that 1$ ice cream they sell on bikes, it is amazing and addictive.

5. Hipster lifestyle

This one is self explanatory. Think of tam tam at Mont Royal in Montreal on Sundays but like, every single day. Yes. 

6. The calm

This city does sleep. In the morning, you're actually awakened by the sound of the birds and not by the sound of honking cabs like in the city. 

7. The flavor 

or the BK flava, as I like to call it

There is something about Brooklyn...this city's got soul! You can feel it everywhere, at any time of the day. Even areas like Flatbush, which can be considered "ghetto" are interesting. I love it, and prefer it over Manhattan :)

Other nominations: The Brooklyn Bridge (That scene in the "Sex and the City" movie where Miranda meets Steve *tears*), Eastern Parkway (labor day weekend!), the Haitian community near Flatbush, how some taxis from Manhattan won't take you to Brooklyn (not the best thing but I actually thought it was quite funny), how beautiful it is to see many interracial couples over there, how clean it is (and when I say clean I mean super clean, like no trash on the sidewalk type of clean), the artists that come from there (Aaliyah, Carmelo Anthony, Woody Allen, Eddie Murphy, Jerry Seinfeld etc), the artists that live there (Tom Hanks, Julia Stiles and more) among many, many other awesome things.

Color blocking is back: Get 10 outfits by mixing and matching the old & new!

I wrote about it and appreciated it but I never really got into it last year. I don't know... it seemed nice on OTHER people but I was scared to try it myself: I didn't mind wearing ONE colored item but you know me and my black...I had to wear my black...

But now.....NOW!!! I'm loving the whole color blocking idea to the fullest! And I'm not talking colored pants a black top and beige shoes: I'm talkin' colored pants, top, shoes and purse! All the way! Yes. Sarah is going to wear lots of colors! It was about time! 

Since I am a rookie to this trend, I went shopping last Friday and when I came back home, I decided to mix and match my new items with some older one to experiment this interesting fashion forward yet risky trend. THE VERY, VERY OLD: The "I can't believe I still have this" kind of old

I bought this orange t-shirt when I started working at Le Château...9 years ago! I bought the pink shoes at Aldo back in 2006 and the pink clutch I've had since high school: I have a picture where I have this clutch in my hands at a club called Groove Society. Groove Society does not exist anymore.

Restaurant review: Osteria Venti is my new Italian lover

The thing about being obsessed with food and traveling is that I become extremely picky when it comes to certain types of food. Remember when I ate that quiche in Paris at Angela's? Yeah, I cannot eat quiche anymore unless it's from Gascogne or some similar amazing bakery. This is what happens when you eat the best local food.

Did you know that my favorite country in the world is Italy? Yes it is! I have been there a few times, went around the whole country on a tour when I was 15 years old and during the years after, I have stayed in villages (we were once in a villa overlooking Tuscany...beautiful) and even stayed in an apartment in Rome near the Piramide metro station. Furthermore, when it comes to Italian food...I've had food that was beyond heavenly and gained about 5 pounds each time I went. This is why when I am back in Montreal, I have a lot of trouble accepting Italian food that is not authentic: Up to now, I've only appreciated the food at Graziella and Da Emma. Thankfully, I just discoverd this restaurant with food that made me experience multiple foodgasms (see definition on the right of the blog). I mean, just the wine was like WHOA so imagine the food.

Osteria Venti is located in the heart of the Old Port and I was quickly attracted by its cozy decor. Brick walls and dimmed lights automatically made me feel warm and at home...just like in Italy :) I loved how the wine selection of the night and the deserts were written on a chalkboard. Their menu is more about QUALITY than about QUANTITY, which is something you do not find often in Montreal with the endless menu pages of many popular restaurants. This particular menu is consisted of different items showcasing regional Italian dishes at their best, with a maximum of 5 well selected choices per course.

Crostini & Antipasti

I started with a "Baccala mantecato" which is a crostini with salted cod spread (Crostini is Italian for "Little Toast). In comparison to your usual crostini, the bread was not that crunchy but it was actually a good thing, in my opinion. I cannot even find the worlds to describe the taste...it was impeccable and not too much; a perfect start. Afterwards, we had the braised octopus with fennel and capers "Insalata Di Polipo". This delicious dish reminded me a lot of the South of Italy where they eat a lot of yummy seafood. By the way, I said "we" but actually, I did not order this. My friend did but I ate most of it...sorry! I couldn't help it: The tangy octupus tasted way too good.
