Homemade face scrub

It's finally hot outside! In my opinion, Montreal is a city with multiple personalities which I often cannot keep up with, even though I was born here. I mean, one week its hot, the other week it's raining and windy, the week after the weather is okay, mild, then a week later winter comes back. Like, really? I think it's one of the only cities I've been to where, when you have a car, you can turn your A/C AND your heat in just one day. Okay, enough nagging! The weather is beautiful now! *pleaseee stay this way pretty please*

As I mentionned in a recent post, just like Montreal, my skin also has multiple personalities. Don't ask. I'm still trying to figure it out myself! Any who, I made (yes, MADE) this face scrub the other day and made left my skin sooooooooo smooth! And I had zero zits after! I love it! And it's FREE guys!

What you need
-A tupperware bowl with a cover. Or a jar. Or a small bowl with saran wrap...you get the point
-Two tablespoons of sugar (I used cane sugar, white sugar is fine also)
-Two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
-A tiny tiny drop of vanilla essence (for the smell)

SO!
-Mix up all of the ingredients! If you see that the mix is too liquid, add a bit of sugar.
-Wet your face a little bit and on top of your, sink scrub! Scrub! Scrub! Get rid of those blackheads! Screw you, dead skin! And I'm serious when I say "on top of your sink", because not all of this scrub will stick to your skin and you don't want to make a mess.
-Rince off with lukewarm water. Or just hop in the shower and rince it off there.

Just touch your skin now. Isn't it so smooth? The olive oil is a good moisturizing element as it adds softness to the skin.

The cool thing about this scrub is that it is easy to make, it will last you 3-4 times or more and your skin ends up looking like that:

I'm joking: This is the result of Photoshop, not my scrub.
P.S. This picture is courtesy of Ann Gee, the makeup artist who asked me to shoot for her portfolio. I had a great time and I love how she did my makeup! She is very talented and i encourage her greatly! I hope she picks me again for another interesting concept :) As my friend Bouboule said: "All that's missing is a tarantula on your hand and the pic would be perfect". Ha!

Have a good week everyone! It's gonna be 33 degrees Celcius tomorrow! WOOHOO!

Restaurant review: For a trendy burger restaurant downtown, go to I-Burger

Last Tuesday, at around 3 p.m: After work , before Jeanne's shift. As we met on the corners of Peel and Ste-Catherine:

-Me: Yoooo
-Jeanne: Yooooooooooo
-Me: I'm hungry
-Jeanne: Me too!!
-Me: Yoooo what's your budget?
-Jeanne: I dunno like 20 bucks?
-Me: Okkk ok me too (sigh). So I heard about this place called I-Burger downtown. Let's go see and if it's too expensive we'll just got to Mister Steer. Nahhh mean?
-Jeanne: Aiiighhhtt I'm down chikita

Turned out to be a great choice! Located on the always-busy Metcalfe street, the atmosphere was pretty calm when we entered: This was already an interesting aspect for me. Brick walls on one side, painted designs on the opposite wall, dark chairs and....wait...the girl had no menu in her hands. I was already freaking out, thinking "Here it goes. Now we're gonna have to wait for the menus, then wait another 30 minutes until she comes back to take our orders etc etc." However, I was quickly proven wrong and on top of that, was pleasantly surprised. Since I did not have time to research about the restaurant before going, I had no idea about the concept! I work nearby and had gotten good "word of mouth" about the place. Furthermore, the lady kindly gave us explanations on their super cool menu....it's literally on your table! Using the touch screen, you can surf through it, look at the images, order, choose what you want and don't want on your burger and can even

What Sassou wore: South Beach fashion week

You guys know how I have no shame in my game. I officially found out I was going to Miami three days before my flight, so no time for shopping! I didn't even plan on buying clothes there, since I knew my schedule would be busy busy busy! So.....I had to look through my closet, get creative and re-invent looks with older clothes! And I think it worked out *sigh* Sometimes you gotta work with watchu' got!

Jeanne's Corner

Hello dear VERSASS readers !!

My name is Jeanne and I love anything that has color, movement, sound and textures. As a kid, my father-daughter activity was to go to garage sales around different neighborhoods. He was a pro! He would actually look them up in the Saturday morning newspaper, The Gazette and write them all on a piece of paper. He always kept a map in the car in order to trace a route. And the key to success for garage sales was to get up early and be there before the "rush" to get first dibs on all the cool stuff.  As he would say "the early bird gets the worm"!  LOL  I'm lying! Actually my mother would say that to me, one of her ruse's to get me up early in the morning in order not to be late for school! ANYWAYS.
So we would hunt around for antics, anything that's old with a history attracted him. He knew exactly what he was looking for: paintings, vases and jewelry and old gowns ... anything with character!. I on the other hand headed straight for the vinyls and clothing. Music & clothes (great match!!!)  So at a very young age I've always been exposed to the arts and fashion ... with the help of my father, with his love of antics and my mother's passion for music. So in my upcoming article I will write about  ..... yeah! you guessed it ! Thrift stores and a specific vintage store that I've totally adopted as my second home ! Hopefully ya'll are going to get your fashion curiosity on and make your way there, and witness some fashionable treasures you probably won't see anymore in your lifetime. This store is a dying breed !  Have a great week people!!! One love. P.S. For info and requests you can e-mail me at jeanne@versass.com

NYC Baby! Sassou's hot spots

I went to NYC recently and actually decided to be a TOURIST.

I've been going to New York almost every year of my life but only for 1-Caribana (Labour Day Weekend)  2-Haitian Festivals and 3-Intense, guilt-free shopping. So the last time I went I wanted it to be a bit different. Well except for the shopping. I mean, you can't go to NYC and not shop. This wouldn't make any sense! I stayed at the Manhattan at Time Square hotel, which was really well located (read the title..hehe) and gave us great service...thanks Dad for the hookup. Here are some of the things I did there:

-I did the Sex & The City tour, which was great! I'm really obsessed by that show so I had a blast visiting all the hot spots from SATC (the movie and the shows), for example: Where Charlotte's dog got gangbanged and where Carrie was supposed to get married in the first movie. We also had cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery, cosmopolitans and more. I suggest this tour if you are a fan! I even got to meet fans from all around the world! Twas was very niiiiice (Borat voice).

-I went on a 3 hour cruise around Manhattan, which was interesting especially because I had never, ever seen the Statue of Liberty. It/she/he looks like a Roman shemale....anyways maybe it's just me. The weather was beautiful that day, but towards the end of the cruise, i was kind of getting a bit bored. I mean, how many bridges can a city have? Geesh.

Cinema Cote-des-Neiges: No comments.

Ok so me and my girl wanted to see the movie DEVIL. Since we took our sweet time eating our steaks at Firegrill, we missed the 8:45 movie at Atwater....Damn! Next one was at 10:15 and since we both live far from downtown, we couldn't go that late. But we found a solution: The movie was playing at 9:25 in Cote-des-Neiges! Cool!

Ok so this movie theatre is a HOT GHETTO MESS. In a funny way though. So first of all, it's inside a very special mall called Plaza Cote-des-Neiges. I don't even know how to describe that mall in English...it's the type of mall that reminds me of the ones in Jamaica, Queens, where you can buy textiles for cheap and get a full nail set for 12$. Anyways, so we go to the ticket counter, and the girl tells us we have to buy our tickets upstairs...um...o...kayyy... We get upstairs to discover that you have to buy your tickets at the POPCORN COUNTER. LOL! We buy the tickets, drinks, popcorn etc... and the dude asks us if we want butter on the popcorn. Of course! So... he then plunges a big spoon in his big plastic bowl of melted butter and pours the content on our popcorn!! FUNNY S***!!!! Could it get any ghettoer? YES!

As we walk through the popcorn and napkins on the floor, we finally find our movie room. Inside, the sound isn't that great but that's okay. So I sit down, and look on my right, then on my left, for the cup holder. Dissapointed, I don't see any, and just as I'm about to put my cup on the floor, my friend shows me the cup holder....between the two benches in front of me! WHAT!!!

So we watch the movie, and then we want to exit the movie theatre to find that the front doors are locked! Not a good thing after seeing "Devil", where the people are trapped in an elevator (got scared for a moment). Finally we found a door that was unlocked. Fiou!

ANYWAYS, very ghetto. But the drink and my movie ticket were 11$ together, and my friends movie ticket + popcorn + drink were 13$. So that's good....when you're on a budget.

P.S. I'm a huuuuge horror movie fan! It all started when I saw Chucky as a kid. So here's the trailer for "DEVIL"....which was really, really, really really scary.

Don't go to Zara when you are on a budget

Or you might go bankrupt. Or not eat until your next paycheck. Or....well....you know...have no money left for awhile.

Because the stuff there is AWESOME! You go for shoes and you end up with: shoes, a skirt, a scarf, skinny jeans, a leather purse, sunglasses, a flowered shirt, a belt, and your bank account in the garbage/overdraft/kapoot/dead.

The End

I would like to add that I only bought shoes and jeans today. I behaved :) But it kinda hurt though because I wanted to buy the whole freakin store #progress

KIJIJI!

I can't believe I never talked about this before! You may have heard of it, but I need to give you the real deal about this amazing website.

Just like Craigslist (which is full of scammers, by the way, beware), it is a website where regular people like me and you post things they wanna sell, or things they would need you to sell them. Appartments, pets, cell phones, pianos, anything you need! If you are desperate, there is even a dating section. Anyways, it's great! I've been going on it for years and the list of things I have found on Kijiji:

-My cat, Lolita (she was free)
-Desk
-An apartment downtown
-A doggie (the cutest thing ever for only 160$: half chihuahua half bichon maltais!)
-Playstation
-Things for the house
-And more....

Here's how it goes. You browse through the website, find the category of the thing you need and you can just search through the things available. If you want, you can be even more specific and type the exact word of what you are looking for in the search box. Even better, on the left of the screen, you can even select a specific price range for what you need. Awesome! Once you find what you need, you can either send a direct message, through Kijiji, or you can contact the person directly through the information they put on their ad. It's that easy! You can also post objects/services/apartments etc. you want to sell and get very fast responses. Oh and remember, Kijiji is not only in Montreal! It's all over the world: Canada, United States, Switzerland, Japan etc. I love it....especially when I'm looking for something specific when on a budget!

Click HERE to access the Montreal Kijiji website.

You'll thank me later.

My fabulous first interview: Keepin' it real with Catherine Lapointe

When I first met Catherine Lapointe, i thought she was a girl my age, a skater maybe? No...A student in fashion? Nah. Designer, yes. Multi-tasker, indeed. I don’t know exactly how to describe this girl. I would say Martha Stewart, but different...cooler, more laid back, and hasn’t been to jail! There’s just something about this Lapointe girl (who is from Granby, by the way). Just having her on Facebook is an entertainment by itself, as her status updates go from sarcasm to random thoughts to pure comedy, going from “beyonce’s perfume surprisingly doesn’t smell completely horrible” to “some jerk cut me off and then showed me the finger this morning at decarie circle, so i gave a dollar to the crackhead panhandling at the red light to have him tell the guy he's an asshole. little moments of joy”. Nice!

But see, I want you guys to get to know her better -See previous post on why I chose her for my first interview on this blog. Designer, mother of a grey eyed angel named Nathan, hard worker, comedian on the down low are only a few words I could use to describe her. After a few e-mail exchanges, I finally got to sit down with her (after pizza and pepsi) to finalize this interview. Good people deserve good attention! Enjoy as we talk about food, fashion, beauty and a whole bunch of random stuff!

FASHION

-When did you fall in love with fashion?

I can’t pinpoint the exact moment, but I do remember being about 6 years old and drawing tshirts and dresses. I remember loving Barbie, not really to play with them, but to coordinate her outfits. My nieces now play with them and I catch myself changing the outfits they put on her.

-Did you study fashion? Do you encourage people to study fashion?

I did  the Fashion Design program at Marie-Victorin, which I never finished. I moved away to Victoria BC on a whim to live there for a year but I came back a month after. I was broke, so I didn’t go back. Instead I took private sewing lessons and learned on my own. I do encourage people to study fashion to learn the techniques and terminology, but if you don’t have a passion for it, you’ll drop out fast. Those are usually the people that went into fashion because they love to shop. They should go in merchandising instead.

-When did you start your clothing line? Why? How do you feel it represents you?

I started HairSprayMafia in 2005. I was doing custom orders here and there, but nothing too serious. I wanted to brand the clothing I was making, but didn’t want to put my own name. The name “HairSprayMafia” comes from my graffiti days. Some guy was saying that girls can’t hold paint cans so I then replied that we can hold more than hairspray cans. My friends and I start writing up HSM around town. I feel it represents me because it has a feminist ideology behind it, it’s non-conformist and, well, I just use a whole lot of hairspray.

-Who is your target market?

Young women with a sharp sense of style, that don’t conform to trends, don’t care what Elle or Vogue tells them to wear yet look more stylish than anyone on the block.

-Where do you see your brand in five years? Any upcoming projects?

I’ve been giving sewing lessons for a few months now, I really enjoy teaching and would love to open a sewing studio where I could teach and have a workshop to design and create.

-Can you give advice to young girls trying to be fashionable on a budget?

Shop around for deals, go to sample sales, organize clothing swaps or trade with friends. Learn how to sew to alter your clothes since fit is the most important part of anything you wear. No matter what the cost of the garment, if it doesn’t fit properly, it’s not worth it. A little tailoring can go a long way. Also, don’t knock on Village, it has crazy finds for accessories.

-What was your worst fashion mistake?

My prom dress. I had made it myself the week before. It was a long empire waist dress with a red stretch satin skirt that had a high slit, the top was bright blue swimsuit fabric with a red trim around the neckline. I wore it with white and red striped leggings. Everyone was calling me Supergirl that night. (See picture below)

-How did you come up wih the idea for Marmoset? Why that name?

I create bibs with old t-shirts (it started because all the bibs I had were too small for Nathan) and belts for kids. A Marmoset is a little monkey that bring their kids on their backs and it inspired for the name of that brand. I came up with this idea especially for safety reasons; finding a cart with a safety belt at the supermarket is a hassle. I also wanted to make them stylish:  Some are Gucci inspired, Polo inspired, girly or boyish, etc.

-COOL! Where do you sell them?

On the web, you can find them on my website www.hairspraymafia.com. They are also sold on www.etsy.com, a website for people doing arts and crafts selling their stuff. Also, there are two stores in Pointe Claire selling them: Belles Mamans (trendy baby shop) and Le Baby Shop

FOOD

-Your favorite meal?

Pretty much anything Mexican. Gimme spicy any day!

Recipe of the week: Red wine risotto with crunchy pesto bread

The first time I went to Italy, 8 years ago, i discovered Risotto. It is creamy rice, usually cooked with a rice called Arborio (it absorbs water better than the other types of rice). There are so many variations for this dish! Seafood, mushroom, zucchini, with grilled eggplant and more!

The process for making it is easy, but can be pricey if you don't have wine. My trick is that whenever I get a bottle of wine that I'm not particularly a fan of, i keep it because it's still great for cooking. Risotto is a pretty heavy meal! You can accompany it with meat...but if you do make sure the amount of meat is not huge because then the risotto will be too much. I made it for my best friend and served it with some easy to make crunchy pesto bread! It was delicious! Check it out!

For the risotto, you will need:
-1 cup of Arborio rice
-Stock (vegetable, chicken or beef), at least 3 cups.
-A bottle of red wine (or white wine, or rosé, it's up to you!)
-2 tablespoons of butter
-1 tablespoon of olive oil
-2 pieces of garlic, thinly chopped
-1 small onion, thinly chopped
-1/4 cup of chopped parsley
-Spices to your taste
-Parmesan cheese (optional)

SO!
-In a small pot, melt one 1 tbsp each of olive oil and butter. Add the onion and brown over high heat for about 2-5 minutes. Add the garlic. Stir.
-Add the risotto! Mix it with the ingredients that are in the pot.  I know this sounds weird, but Giada de Laurentiis from the Food Channel was right when she said that this is a good way for the rice to absorb all the flavours from the oil, butter etc..
-With the heat still on high, add one cup of stock, stir. DO NOT COVER! Wait until the water is completely absorbed. Add a cup of wine, wait until it is almost completely absorbed! Repeat process: stock-wine-stock-wine, until the rice is cooked and a little creamy. Don't let it dry out!
-When your reach the desired consistency, add 1 tbsp of butter, the chopped parsley and spices. Mix slowly!
-Then, stir in the parmesan cheese, if you want. I don't because I am lactose intolerant :(

For the crunchy pesto bread, you will need:
-Butter
-Pesto (I buy the one that is already made from Fontaine Santé, but it is really not expensive in the supermarket)
-Bread (I used baguette)

SO!
-Turn on the oven at 400, on grill.
-In a small bowl, mix about 2 tbsp of butter with 1 tbsp of pesto.
-Put the butter-pesto mix on bread.
-Put the bread in the oven for 5-10 minutes, until slightly browned.
-Serve with the risotto.

OSCS: Aldo Entrepôt/Liquidation on Mont-Royal

Obsessively Searching for Clothes on Sale

I discovered this place while going to eat breakfast at L'Avenue on Mont-Royal (amazing restaurant, by the way, I think I go there at least once a week) a couple of years ago. I knew Aldo Entrepôt existed, I've been to the ones on St-Hubert and Ste-Catherine numerous times. But this one....wow....(about to cry of joy)....this one is DIFFERENT!!!

I believe that they have deals with other suppliers because they do not just sell Aldo shoes there. They have beautiful Reeboks, Creatives and other stylish brands of shoes. And most of the  things there are reduced to a price that is hard to imagine. For example, the other day I saw leather gloves I liked (I know it's summer....but hey!). I saw that they were 12,95$ and let out a little scream of joy. Got to the cash to discover that there was another 50% off added to them!!! So I paid about 7$ for 100% leather gloves!!

A couple of days later, I found boots I liked. Again, I know it's summer, but there are better deals on winter stuff during summer. I don't care if the boots are from last year, if they're hot, i'll take em. I am still speechless that they ended up costing me only 15$....HA! I especially like them because of the "hidden" platform heel :)

The flash makes them look white, but the color is beige.

OSCS: Winners!!

Obsessively Searching for Clothes on Sale

I have been shopping there for YEARS! I cannot even describe the amount of beautiful things I have found: Stuff for the house, trendy martini shakers, Anne Klein blazer, plates for home, gifts (oh I always find nice gifts there!), headphones, perfume sets, jewelry, underwear (yes, underwear), lots of shoes and the list goes on!

There are things for MEN, WOMEN, KIDS, the RICH AND THE BROKE ASS!!!

I do not go there often, but when I do, I always manage to find something. I like how the store resembles TJ Maxx, Marshall's and Ross, from the United States. And the thing with there is that everything is low price and brand new! A lot of popular brands, too. But you have to be patient, and search well!

The ones I love going to are:

-The one downtown, Place Montréal Trust
-Place Versailles (there is also a HOME SENSE in it...with lots of nice things for your house/appartment)
-Boulevard Tashereau, next to cinema Guzzo on the South Shore.

A couple of tips when you go there:

-If you find something, buy it!...(if you have the $ of course) And don't misplace it, there is a chance it was the only one in the store, and if you come back as early as later in the day, it might have dissapeared. And you might end up very, very sad.
-Don't ask for help. They won't help you. As a matter of fact, the people working there are mad at you for creating the mess.
-Not every Winners is the same. What you find downtown, you might never find on the South Shore and vice versa. Explore!
-Try before you buy, because if it doesn't fit and you want to exchange it for another size, you might go back and see that the whole batch of that item you just bough is LONG GONE.
-Go to the "Liquidation" section in every section. You might find amazing deals!! In the section for home, i have often found beautiful candles or picture frames: Because of a microscopic scratch, they were reduced as low as 1$.
-They have gourmet foods that are rare to find!!! Coffee, flavored olive oils and more.

My sister came with a full Winners shopping bag the other day. There was a sale! Most of their summer clothes are reduced! NICE!
P.S. That whole bag of new stuff cost her less than 100 $ :)

Click HERE for their website! You'll be able to find their locations across Canada!

Vintage/Second hand fashion: ADS

Those who know me well already know that I have the capability to search in stores for hours....sales, Zara, Winners...and.....ADS. What is ADS???...... It's the abbreviation for....Armee du Salut aka the Salvation Army!! Yeah, i said it.

SURPRISED?? If you knew how much stuff I found there. The same way i'll pay over 150$ for jeans, I'll find something cute there for 2,99. Who would've thought?

So today, my friend Cathy and I stopped there and found a lot of cute stuff. Did you know that a couple of well known brands DONATE NEW STUFF to them? :) They rip the tag but hello....I know the logo! Anyways, we found a couple of cute things, and on top of that, the shoes were 50% off....I mean, they were already like, 10$ or less so that was a little too good to be true. Usually the shoes suck, but I guess the ADS in Brossard is different, cuz we found nice ones: Nine West, Aldo and more.

Check out some cool stuff we found!

Cathy's NINE WEST stilettos: 4,50$

My best friend and her super cute little wallet (real leather): 1$

Nice ALDO wedges: 4$

Gladiator shoes: 2,50$ (still speechless)

They also have great second hand books, vinyls, movies, home decoration and more, for a VERY, extremely low price. I suggest that you try going someday, and if you don't want anyone seeing you in there, wear a hat and sunglasses......hehe. Being stylish and fashionable doesn't have a specific price tag.

In the past, we have found things such as:
-An original Marie Saint-Pierre vest
-A GAP jean jacket
-A whooooole bunch of cute little purses and clutches
-Armani Exchange jean shorts.... and more

The ones where I have found the coolest things are:
-In Brossard, next to the Terminus Panama
-The one on Notre Dame, corner Guy in Montreal

This is dedicated to my ADS partners in crime: Jeanne Michaud-Hedge and Cathy K

Fellas, this one is for you!

Just read this AMAZING article called: "I'm broke, what do I do now?" on http://bitchielife.necolebitchie.com.

All the men out there that are on a budget, I would suggest you read it. Just ignore the first part about first date sex though.... And I quote my favorite part:

"You won’t find a female baller in the club, you’ll find her at the most expensive restaurant in town with all her friends.  Secret: Women will ball out major on food."

SO TRUE! Me and my girls do this thing every two weeks, when we get paid:  Every two Fridays, we enjoy a night at one of Montreal's finest restaurants and splurge on apetizers (foie gras, tartare etc.), creative entrees, aged bottles of wine or 10-20 year porto and more. We won't be spending that at the club, trust me! Although we're on a budget, we'd rather spend our money on a gastronomical experience. This week, we will be going to Le Local, in the Old Port...

Guys...Aldo has great shoes, you won't necessarily impress us with your show off brands...

Showin some love to the stores Olivia and Boodwar :)

It was about time for me to talk about my FAVORITE STORE in downtown Montreal!
Located in the super trendy Cours Mont-Royal, this store keeps amazing me! I remember a couple of years ago, my friend Jennifer told me she worked at Olivia and Boodwar (different stores, but with similar clothes and the same owner). I was like huh? Wtf is that store? Bref, I thought I would be super expensive because of its location....
I was WRONG! Not only the items at Olivia and Boodwar are NOT expensive at all (I think the most expensive item is around 60$), but the clothes are original, trendy, sexy but not trashy and fashion forward! This store reminds me of the trendy mini boutiques I went to in Italy, especially one called Dixie in Florence. Almost every time I have an event, I stop there to pick up something I know no one else will have!....well maybe someone else does but I have not come across anyone that had one of the multiple items I bought in these stores...YAY!!! And wow, their sales rack? Amazing! I always manage to find something. Even if it is not my size, I find a way to make if fit anyways because it's sooo gorgeous :)

Thanks Jen for making me discover this beautiful store, and I will certainly remain a loyal shopper for the years to come!

Oh and by the way, now they have a shoe and accessories store! Located in the same indoor mall!

Click Here to see what they have on the website!

Here are some of the beautiful items I have bought there in the past year. P.S. The brown belt that you see on most of the pictures (my all time favorite belt) is actually from Le Château. It is the most expensive item on these pics...lol...it was 40$.

Dress: 24,99$ at Boodwär
Shoes: 9,99$ at Olivia shoe and accessories store! yay

Dress: On sale for 19,99$ at Boodwär

Shirt: Olivia, 9,99$ (it was a Large! But fit nice anyways)

Nice loose shirt: Olivia, 9,99$.
