[RESTAURANTS] Diablos BBQ: Southern food in the heart of Montreal x contest

Two weeks ago, we tried Diablos BBQ and we absolutely loved it!

Restaurant review & Contest + rules after the break!

Just before the holidays, I attended the Notable awards...Ok I didn't really attend the awards but instead, the after party #DontJudgeMe. There, I met a few Twitter followers, had drinks with them, interacted, laughed etc.  After a couple of martinis, I started rambling to Raphael514 about how we don't have Southern food in Montreal and how was craving for chicken'n'waffles and other fried foods. He laughed and just said: "Why don't you come to my restaurant then? We have chicken'n'waffles on Sundays".

He couldn't be serious.

My sister and I were so shocked and pleased at the same time that we simultaneously started laughing nervously.

Southern food...in Montreal? No!!! It couldn't be!

Indeed, he was right and I did not hallucinate the words that came out of his mouth. Diablos BBQ is located in the heart of the Latin Quarter and
serves Southern inspired food and drinks. I just had to try this spot.

So after eating some yummy Southern food in Atlanta at Gladys last January, I came back to Montreal with that same craving I had in December for fried stuff. I immediately messaged Raphael and asked him when I should come to try Diablos...I couldn't wait any longer. He replied that Mondays are usually a good day because it's "All you can eat ribs". Did you read this well? ALL YOU CAN EAT RIBS! So Fabi (my sister from another mother) and I went last Monday and absolutely loved it

The Restaurant

Diablos is a baby in the Montreal restaurant scene as it only opened 8 months ago in April 2012. What inspired them to bring a Southern Flavour to Montreal? Well in the past, the partners/owners

[MEN'S FASHION] Spotted! Dean Ellis from PhillipEllis

On the second day of Montreal's Fashion Week 24th edition, I was blown away by this man's style. I absolutely wanted to feature his style on Versass before Journal Métro, Elle Québec or other publication (HA!). Dean Ellis was here from Toronto and he looked like he came straight from a magazine's fall/winter spread. I'm serious.

(More pics and details on what he is wearing after the break)

[BEAUTY] DL Esthétique Media Event X My first facial (Full Oxygen Treatment)

On January 30th, 2013, DL Esthétique held a media event in their Nun's Island clinic. I was very anxious to attend this occasion since my knowledge about advanced skin care was minimal. In essence, I saw this as a learning opportunity.

Their media event was held not only to celebrate their one year anniversary, but also for the media to gain a greater understand of aesthetics & the services they offer. My sister and I were greeted with

2012: A visual retrospective on this awesome year

As I looked back on the previous year, I realized: "DAMN! A lot has happened". Not only I believe I've grown TREMENDOUSLY (I believe this past year was one of my most significative years in terms of personal growth), but I also met amazing people, ate great food and traveled to cool places. Here are a few highlights from this past year in Sassou's life :)

Oh and before you look at the pics, you can click here to see my 12 positive things about 2012! I would also like to point out that I am writing this post from Miami and although I love my city, I wouldn't mind staying a few more....years. Lol.  Bye! Happy new year!

Sass was there: Toqué book launch at L'Arsenal

When I think of the restaurant Toqué, I think of three things:

-Extreme class
-French cuisine
-The renowned chef Normand Laprise.

It was impossible for me to decline the invitation to their gastronomical book launch at l'Arsenal. Toqué is one of the top restaurants in Montreal: Zagat's first edition of their Guide to Montreal put Toqué at the top of their list and the restaurant was awarded the Five Diamonds rating (the highest rating) by the Canadian Automobile Association and the American Automobile Association, to name a few distinctions. And when I said "Damn the book is 70$! That's not a joke!" the restaurant's chef, Marc-Antoine Crête replied (well it was more like screamed): "DEUX ANS DE TRAVAIL QUE TU VOIS LÀ!! DEUX ANS DE TRAVAIL MA CHERE!!!!" (translation: This is two years of work! Two years of work lady!!!). Okay. He was right. Cool guy though.

Now back to the event.

I did not know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised to enter the beautiful room and see a fresh oyster bar on my left, a wine bar in the middle, people serving horse tartar & tataki on my right (you read that right) and...food trucks. Yes. They brought food trucks inside of L'Arsenal. Wine tasting, good music, food, good looking people and the "crème de la crème" of Montreal's gastronomical scene. This "5 à 7" (our term for Happy Hour) was more like a 5 à 10 as this event turned into a party.

Charles Antoine Crête, the chef at Toqué, having a drink.
while signing a book.
One thing that got my attention was the "Ouache Bar"...Let me explain something: "Ouache is a word that naturally comes out of a French Quebecor's mouth following a reaction of disgust: It's our "Ew". So this Ouache bar had a bunch of disgusting shots. When I asked the bartender (dressed as a cow girl, by the way) what the drink was, she told me it was a bunch of stuff mixed together. I had a shot and...Ouache!!! Really gross. I'm sure many people still enjoyed them after a couple of wine glasses. Ha.

Check out more pics and an interesting video after the break!

Sassou's Montreal faves: Food, Markets + Going out

Why hello my loves! It's September already and it's starting to get cold! I don't really mind because I do love my leather jackets and blazers. September is also the month where I notice how many people have decided to come live in our beautiful city, Montreal.

This article is for the newbies and also for my fellow readers as I have decided to share my all time favorite spots in this multi-cultural city. This first edition will solely be dedicated to Food spots and Bars/clubs & the next editions will include beauty and fashion spots. I was born and raised in Montreal and although I have a love/hate relationship with my city, I still think it is one of the most beautiful in the world mohstly for cultural reasons. Think of this article as my own version of Mirror's "Montreal's Best" (R.I.P., Mirror, I will miss you). If you have any other suggestions, feel free to leave a comment! These are my favorite spots and I am sure there are more places for me to discover.

FOOD & GOING OUT

As a self proclaimed foodie, I admit I am the type that would  go out to eat and then might end up at a bar or sometimes, I'll prefer going to a bar that serves food. So this kind of explains why I put these two together in one category.

Breakfast/Brunch

I'm a bruch gal. You can catch me almost any Saturday or Sunday at one of these spots.

-L'Avenue, 922 Mont Royal East.
Metro Mont Royal

I know, I know, the lineup sucks but the vibe is great and the food is good and not too expensive. If you can, go there during the week to avoid waiting too long.

I usually go there when the lineup at L'Avenue is too intense. Just as good, minus the ambiance. I  suggest their crepes!

4 things I like about Méchant Boeuf

Last month, I went to Méchant Boeuf with my family and we all loved it! Mind you, my Dad is pretty picky about the food and he enjoyed each bite. Since then, I went back a couple of times either just for drinks, dinner or drinks and bread & butter (don't ask).

Pic found on  mrlewburger.com
Here are four of my favorite things about this place

1. Their foie gras poêlé

It MELTS in your mouth. The waitress made a mistake and brought us the foie gras torchon at the beginning and it is not comparable to the warm version. One of the best I've tasted in Montreal.

2. The staff

Excellent service. Cute waiters. Jason at the oyster bar is very sociable. Everyone there is fun, friendly yet professional

Lab #5 Wine Tasting awesome event

Last Tuesday, me and a couple of friends attended a pretty awesome event for wine lovers. If you never came to Quebec & plan to come soon, it is important to know how much we love wine.

SocialGrapes.com is an iphone app to guide wine appreciators towards a variety of choices, depending on their taste. Their founders are doing something which I personally have never seen in Montreal: Every week, they conduct a "Blind" wine tasting event called the "Social Grapes Lab" in their office, which is located in Montreal's Old Port. The wine tasters then fill out a form with their comments and ratings on each wine (and remember, they have NO IDEA where it comes from, the name, ingredients. well...except alcohol of course), all of that while

What Sassou wore: Cream colors

I got a lot of compliments for this outfit! There is actually nothing new, except for my wife beater.

-Wedges: Aldo
-Skirt: 25 year old vintage skirt from God knows where
-Wife beater: Le Garage. They have great, affordable, long-lasting wife beaters. I bought it with the 25$ gift card I got in the gift bag at the opening of the Garage/Dynamite store on Ste-Catherine and Peel.
-Chain: My own, my favorite, my lucky charm and it has no brand. It was a Sweegt 16 gift.
-Watch: Marc Jacobs
-Hoop earrings: Aldo.

If you don't count my watch, I think my whole outfit isn't even worth 50$ since I got the wedges on sale. But the style and the elegance of the skirt and ensemble in general...PRICELESS!

Sass will be on TV

This week has been a HORRIBLE week in news (I will not get into details. You guys KNOW what happened in Miami, Maryland and...yes...Montreal). However, I have some GOOD NEWS!

I was selected in the top 100 to participate on VTélé's cooking show/competition "Et que ça saute"! It's basically a competition between amateur chefs (yes, I am an amateur and PROUD damnit) with a first prize of 100,000$!!! If the show is like it was last year, I will probably have to prepare ONE EPIC MEAL to be selected in the top 25 and really begin this stressful, fun and interesting competition.

The show is in French (sorry English loves) and you can see the concept, read about the judges and view last season's episodes here. I'm happy to be in the top 100 and will be working very, very hard to make you guys proud.

YAY!

Keepin' it real with Sass: What is béchamel sauce and how to make it

I got this email a month ago and I'd like to start by apoligizing for taking such a long time to respone! Anyways! Better late than never! We always appreciate when you guys email us your questions! Here it goes:

Hey Sass,

I'm not French but I keep seeing this white sauce they call bechamel in a lot of recipes online. What is it exactly? Is it good? How do you make it?

P.S. I am lazy. I saw recipes online and they seemed too difficult. I'm sure you have an easy one! LOL!

Restaurant review: Osteria Venti is my new Italian lover

The thing about being obsessed with food and traveling is that I become extremely picky when it comes to certain types of food. Remember when I ate that quiche in Paris at Angela's? Yeah, I cannot eat quiche anymore unless it's from Gascogne or some similar amazing bakery. This is what happens when you eat the best local food.

Inside the restaurant (website pic)
Did you know that my favorite country in the world is Italy? Yes it is! I have been there a few times, went around the whole country on a tour when I was 15 years old and during the years after, I have stayed in villages (we were once in a villa overlooking Tuscany...beautiful) and even stayed in an apartment in Rome near the Piramide metro station. Furthermore, when it comes to Italian food...I've had food that was beyond heavenly and gained about 5 pounds each time I went. This is why when I am back in Montreal, I have a lot of trouble accepting Italian food that is not authentic: Up to now, I've only appreciated the food at Graziella and Da Emma. Thankfully, I just discoverd this restaurant with food that made me experience multiple foodgasms (see definition on the right of the blog). I mean, just the wine was like WHOA so imagine the food.

The restaurant

Osteria Venti is located in the heart of the Old Port and I was quickly attracted by its cozy decor. Brick walls and dimmed lights automatically made me feel warm and at home...just like in Italy :) I loved how the wine selection of the night and the deserts were written on a chalkboard. Their menu is more about QUALITY than about QUANTITY, which is something you do not find often in Montreal with the endless menu pages of many popular restaurants. This particular menu is consisted of different items showcasing regional Italian dishes at their best, with a maximum of 5 well selected choices per course.

The entrance (website pic)

Crostini & Antipasti

I started with a "Baccala mantecato" which is a crostini with salted cod spread (Crostini is Italian for "Little Toast). In comparison to your usual crostini, the bread was not that crunchy but it was actually a good thing, in my opinion. I cannot even find the worlds to describe the taste...it was impeccable and not too much; a perfect start. Afterwards, we had the braised octopus with fennel and capers "Insalata Di Polipo". This delicious dish reminded me a lot of the South of Italy where they eat a lot of yummy seafood. By the way, I said "we" but actually, I did not order this. My friend did but I ate most of it...sorry! I couldn't help it: The tangy octupus tasted way too good.

New night for foodies at my favorite bar in Montreal: I'll House You

The bar

L'Ecurie Bar et Table, a resto-bar located in the heart of Montreal's trendy Plateau Mont-Royal neighborhood, has continued to increase in popularity since its opening in the summer of 2011. Since then, it has been talked about in newspapers including Montreal's Journal Métro and in other popular media. It is my favorite bar in the city because of a few things: Great music (the popular, the hip hop, the old school...just how I like it), good vibe, trendy decor, friendly bartenders and even better.....GOOD FOOD! This shouldn't really be a surprise since one of its co-owners, my good friend and Facebook/local celebrity Jeremie Anfossi Trepanier, is one of the biggest food lovers I know. When I think of him, I automatically think of all of his gastronomical pictures and restaurant "Check In's" on Facebook! Great food and drinks such as the house favorite, the Nouski (a combination of vodka and Orangina) are a great combination to an entertaining night!

The event

Buddha and his sausages
On top of "Les Mardis Pouliches" which is French for "Tuesday's Chicks Night", L'Ecurie Bar et Table added another fun night for my family of foodies: "I'll House You" Wednesdays in collaboration with Felipe St-Laurent and his homemade crafted delicatessen and high end processed meat catering company "Ils en fument du bon" (Google translate that. You will smile :P). Felipe is an unforgettable character: His sparkling and hyperactive personality add an interesting twist to his cooking talents. With all of his experience in the gastronomical and catering industries, he decided to launch his own delicastessen company 6 months ago. Now, on Wednesdays, the customers at L'Ecurie will be able to taste his products & eat some good food, all of that while jamming to some soulful, funky-fresh hip house music. I went to the premiere last Wednesday and had a blast! I felt bad for my friend that is currently in lent  until Easter(good intentions though) because she could not taste the yummy yummy homemade sausages. Oh well. More for me!...muhahahaha Some sausages had cheese in them, some of them were made with Guiness beer and stuffed with mint (yum!) but my favorites were definitely the ones with the black garlic or as Felipe described it best:

Amber Rose in Montreal

Amber Rose was in Montreal last Friday! For those who don't know who she is, Ms Rose is a model/socialite who once had a very interesting and public relationship with Kanye West. She is known for her shaved blond hair, pink lipstick (sometimes even blue!) and unique sense of style.

She was hosting the launch of BODB Model Managment at KOKO, which is a cozy restaurant/bar/lounge located in the Opus Hotel and I had the privilege to hang out with her and her team during that event. If you look on the right of my blog, you will see that she was included in the pictures of people whose style I admire, and believe me, she looked fierce! Amber was wearing a fitted semi-transparent dress which was black and grey with mini stars all over....I'm still searching for the designer, by the way. Her sunglasses were vintage Valentiono from 1990, courtesy of the Vintage Frames Company and, of course, she had her signature pink lipstick! Simple but chic jewelry completed her outfit, which I found nice since I am REALLY not a fan of huge jewelry or bling or whatever the rappers call it.

She's hot! I was surprised that her fan base mostly consisted of girls and that not that many guys stood in the line to take a picture with her. In my opinion, they were probably shy....or intimidated....which is too bad for them because she's very, very nice and down to earth...unlike other American models I've met (#BlackberryZipperface). Check her out!

Restaurant Vallier: Nice discovery! / Belle découverte!

(Version française plus bas)
After leaving Marché Bonsecours at 10:00 p.m. on Day 3 of MFW, it was quite hard to find a restaurant. Most restaurants were either too expensive (dude, I'm not spending 40$ for your stuff, not today) or had already closed their kitchen.

Nonetheless, we found a good restaurant on McGill! I had heard about it in the past, but had completely forgotten where it was. Lucky us, their kitchen was opened! Vallier Bistro et comptoir is a charming restaurant with an original menu and a good "home" feel, as the service was friendly. Here is a glimpse of their menu: Mac'n' cheese with bacon, game meat loaf with porto foie gras (OH WOW!) and filet mignon napped with onion confit. I had the "paté chinois au confit de canard", which is sheppard's pie with duck and homemade ketchup (superb! it was yummy) and Dimi, who was a bit skeptical, had the simple burger with fries. According to him, it was very good even if I ate all of his fries. We had chicken wings as an apetizer, and if I was with Cathy, we probably would've chosen the beef tartar (I LOVE tartar). We finished the meal with a nice glass of porto. Subliminal. I definitely have to go back and try something else, everything looked good.

Highly suggested!

Montreal Fashion Week: 19th edition (Day 3)

Another day full of fashion! This post is dedicated to the lovely Fabiani (on the picture with me) who attended MFW for the first time, and believe me, she will be back! I spent the day at the showroom with Ralph Leroy, and then I attended 4 SHOWS with Dimi and Fabi. We had a blast! Well, it was partly due to the champagne. I have to admit that one new thing I appreciated during this edition of MFW was the yummy appetizers in the Cocktail Lounge. Yummy salmon, yummy cucpcakes and more! Great idea! So here's what I thought about the shows!

Okay so let's start with Serum, by Marta M. Not a lot of people, artificial grass on the runway, barefoot models and so-so clothes. I guess I am really not part of her target market, as her clothes are more destined to be super comfortable and for an older crowd. Not that I don't like comfortable clothes (I am wearing baggy sweat pants as I am writing), but....I just didn't like anything. It kind of reminded me of those clothes you see at Reitmans....

Next show: Lovas! It was nice!! Unfortunately, I do not have pictures since the battery for my camera was charging! A lot of pink, a lot of black, a lot of nice clothes. The designer, Wesley Badanjak, is originally from Toronto and was very nice. When I asked him: "Why use the color pink? Don't you think it was a bit stereotypical?", he replied that when he did research on the color pink, he discovered many interesting scientific details about it, notably that there were subtle designs visible on that color. I never would have guessed! The clothes were rather conservative and flirty, with pant suits and feminine dresses. Here is a picture from the MFW Website.

Collection Iris came after. Not bad! But not wow. Plain, work clothes, a lot of black, brown and beige. A lot of suits. Not a lot that I would wear, really. But I am sure many working women out there would love it! I particulartly liked this suit, with the shirt under. One day, when I have to wear a suit, i would probably wear something like that. The picture is also from the MFW website, since mine was quite blurry (Note to self: Buy a new camera soon).

After...it was time for the most anticipated show of the night! Soia & Kyo!! Their colorful coats always impress me, and they usually have something ultra-special during their show. Who remembers when Eve Gravel appeared on the runway for them! It was epic! This year, however, the coats were cute, and the show was not bad (Maybe my expectations were too high).  The "nerdy" look they gave to the models was fun to watch! I found their leather coats for men original, and ESPECIALLY liked the dark blue coat for women that appeared at the end of the show: It had gold zippers everywhere! And the bracelets with the coat? Beautiful! Check out the picture of that coat! I have to admit that I miss their usually vibrant colors, as most of the coats were brown, dark blue, beige or black. I appreciated their nice trench coats, would definitely wear one of them. As usual, their gift bag was cute (and reusable, nice!): It had a mouse pad, their lookbook, a mini wallet and a keychain. Awwww...

OOOOH!!! And that day, I also met HERBY MOREAU!!! One of my icons! I was really happy about that! Here I am with him :)

Then, Day 3 was over :( Click SEE MORE to see other pictures I took!

Montreal Fashion Week: 19th edition (Day 1-2)

So there was another fashion week in Montreal last week, and to be more specific, it was the 19th edition. I am very happy to have worked with Ralph Leroy to literally create a magical show (that was successful, according to many, many people...you will see some EXCLUSIVE pictures soon, in another article) because some of the other shows were just okay this season. I am still happy with some discoveries and am happy to talk about them!! Here it goes!

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 27th (DAY 1)
Since on Monday, I could not attend the shows, I went to media welcome cocktail. Check out what I had to say about it HERE. Anyways, I heard the shows from that day were good, saw the picctures etc. etc. What got my attention was the Marie Saint-Pierre showroom, where she exhibited her lookbook all over the wall. Creative! I would've loved to see that.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28th (DAY 2)
I was dissapointed to have missed the first 3 shows because of school :( The ones I missed were Modethik (which featured clothes by a designer friend, Olga Tigilras) Cocolily and Micalla. I discovered a designer whose clothes were nice! Her name is Valerie Dumaine and her clothes were feminine, casual and classy at the same time! I particularly appreciated her use of stripes at the end of ther fashion show Nice discovery! Here is my fave piece by her. I would wear th in a heartbeat....those who know me KNOW that I love my black clothes hehe.

After that show, my nicest discovery of MFW19: Second Clothing. I was surprised to not have seen more people! I have to admit that it was my favorite show, after Barilà. I would wear EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF CLOTHING I saw during that fashion show. It all started with a mini documentary about how they came up with the idea for their "yoga jean". Nice! Then, a few yoga poses on the runway, with the models wearing the yoga jeans. I definitely want a pair! The fashion show started after: It was a mix of sexy, colored or plain jeans with a selection of beautiful, colored pieces. I froze when I saw the flowered dress below...I loved it! Sorry if the picture is blurry but I had no choice to put it. So Mr. Eric Wazana...if you read this, please let me know how I could get one. Oh and I forgot to say the music selection was great! Loved hearing Michael Jackson on the runway. P.S. Their website is pretty cool too, check it out!

Notice that my two last pictures have the same model. This was unintentional! She's very pretty though, don't know her name but she did a lot of shows.

Oh and I met DENIS GAGNON!!!! Twas the highlight of my day.
