Short hair update: 2 months

Can you believe it's already been just a bit over two months since I big chopped my hair?

My hair is about 1.5 inches long, I usually flatten the curls with gel

Up to now, here's what I've learned:

-I need to wet my hair like, all of the time. It LOVES moisture
-I LOVE henna. I buy the one from Lush. I also love ghassoul clay.
-I am a product junkie
-The hair DOES grow. And the more it grows, the more I am loving the curls.
-I still do not want to use heat on my hair.
-EcoStyler gel is my best friend
-People do look at me differently
-My eyebrows need to be on point all of the time. Same thing for my makeup *sigh*
-I cannot compare my hair to anyone's. It is my own. And I think I may have 3 "textures": 3c, 4a, 4b
-The more natural the product is, the better. My faves up to now: Extra virgin coconut oil, olive oil, Jamaican Black Castor oil, Curl Junkie Rehab deep conditioner.

Check out a few more pics & my complete regimen after the jump! And follow me on Tumblr for more pics!

Yesterday after washing my hair

My regimen & products used

-Co wash 3-4 times a week with Herbal Essences Hello Hydration or Tresemme Naturals.

-Apply leave in conditioner (Kinky Curly Knot Today or Cantu Shea Butter repair cream) & then seal moisture with a mix of Extra-Virgin Coconut Oil, Shea butter and Jamaican Black Castor Oil.

-Style hair with Eco Styler Gel.

-Every day, apply Jamaican Black Castor oil to my whole head before going to sleep.

-Once a week, apply a hot oil treatment to my whole head. I use avocado oil, jamaican black castor oil, olive oil and sweet almond oil. Cover head with a plastic cap and then with a heat cap (I use the one from Hair Therapy). Rinse out the oil treatment and then apply Ghassoul Clay (which I mix with water, aloe juice and honey). I let the clay dry for about 20 minutes and then I rinse it out with cold water. I then apply the Curl Junkie Rehab deep conditioner, cover my head with a plastic & heat cap AGAIN. Let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour and then rinse it out.

-Occasionally (when I feel like I have way too much build up), I will do an apple cider vinegar rinse or even........shampoo my hair. Of course, I use a sulfate free shampoo & I really like the one I won on CurlyNikki: Elucence Moisture Benefits shampoo. It smells wonderful.

-Every 3 weeks, I will dye my hair with henna using Lush's "Caca Noir". It adds a nice color. Very messy though, very, very messy.

Where to buy these products if you're in Montreal

-I buy the Jamaican Black Castor oil at Ricom or at Mama Africa. I get my other oils at Aliments Naturels Tau and sometimes at Winners (the Extra Virgin Coconut oil is cheaper there).

-Eco Styler gel can be found at APlus downtown (Place Alexis Nihon) and at Mama Africa.

-Hello Hydration or Tresemme conditioners can be found at any pharmacy or Wal Mart. Watch out for sales! Totally worth it.

-I buy my henna at Lush. I am currently looking for a cheaper alternative: 24,95$ for 3 applications hurts my heart.

-The Ghassoul Clay can be found at Aliments Naturels Tau but I am sure it is cheaper online. I am just very lazy.

-Curl Junkie Rehab and the Elucence shampoo can be found online on the CurlMart website.

  1. Hi, I really enjoy reading your blog entries, they are always so insightful and pleasent to read. I too recently did the big chop, its actually been 4 weeks now.Although, I am loving being completely natural I am finding it challenging to know which products will work well for my hair texture and aid to define my often nappy curls. Its nice that for this perticular post you've provided a few suggestions which will be so helpful to me and my hair. I hope that in the future if you stumble upon any good organic products, that you continue to share and also provide a location as to where to purchase them, that would be so greatly appreciated. Keep up the amazing creative work that you and continue to be a natural essence.

  2. Hey guys , have you tried the hair plopping method for more definition....I have no clue if it works on short hair!!!!Well I guess if you use a t-shirt instead of a towell and just leave the t shirt on your hair instead of srcunching your hair it should work too. Please let me know if it works on short hair ....

  3. Hey guys!

    Thank you for the comments!
@BNT Back to Natural I actually plop my hair! Thanks for pointing that out as I will edit my post. I do not use a towel to dry my hair (unless I just just finished rinsing out the henna) and instead, use old t-shirts. I find that my hair has less frizz and more definition. So ;yes, for me, this technique works on my short hair.
